The Place

Bali is loud where it wants to be and ancient where it counts. We build trips that split time between an Ubud rice-valley retreat, a quiet cliffside in Uluwatu, and one night at a working temple festival — booked months ahead with a Brahmin family we've known for years.

Preferred · Why we go

Three reasons Bali stays on our atlas.

Preferred · 01

Two Balis

The jungle interior and the surf coast — we run both, on the same trip.

Preferred · 02

Real ceremony access

Through a family priest, not a tour desk.

Preferred · 03

Wellness without kitsch

Silent retreats and Balinese healers vetted over a decade.

Nusa Lembongan day-sail

A traditional jukung across to the quieter islands for snorkelling and a beach lunch.

A possible shape

One way to spend your time in Bali.

Not a fixed trip — a sketch to argue with. Every Gallivant journey is rebuilt around your dates, pace, and people.

  1. Day 1–2

    Arrive · Seminyak

Land, decompress at a beachfront villa, walk Petitenget for the first sunset.

    Ubud

A rice-valley retreat, morning yoga, the Sacred Monkey Forest, a long lunch at Locavore.

Move east to the rice valleys. Walk, swim in a river pool, dinner at the homestay.

Black-sand snorkelling, the USS Liberty wreck at Tulamben, sunrise from Mount Agung.

  5. Day 9–10

Where you'll sleep

Three archetypes, one shortlist.

Bambu Indah, Ubud

Eco-luxe heritage

Bambu Indah, Ubud

Antique Javanese bridal houses on a riverside permaculture farm. Founded by John Hardy.

Como Uma Canggu

Surf-and-wellness

Como Uma Canggu

A modern beachfront retreat with the best ocean-view yoga shala on the coast.

Bulgari Resort Uluwatu

Cliffside grand-luxe

Bulgari Resort Uluwatu

Italian-Balinese design 150 m above the Indian Ocean. The finishing flourish.

On the plate

Food, drinks, and the rituals around them.

Babi guling in Ubud

Suckling pig as ritual food. We go to the warung the priests go to.

Nasi campur at Warung Nia

The platter that explains Balinese food in one sitting.

Bebek betutu

A whole duck slow-roasted in banana leaves for eight hours — order a day ahead.

Locavore, Ubud

Bali's only world-50 restaurant. Tasting menu, booked months out.

Which season

The year, in four moods.

Dry · Apr–Oct

Cool mornings, blue afternoons, the surf coast at its best. Peak July and August — book ahead.

Shoulder · Apr & Oct

Our favourite windows: dry weather, lower prices, and ceremonies aplenty.

Wet · Nov–Mar

Lush green rice fields, daily afternoon showers, far fewer travellers. Surfers move to the east coast.

Field notes

Small things that change the trip.

Practical Bali knowledge from people who keep going back.

  • 01

Bali days are long — start at sunrise, nap at noon, restart at four.

  • 02

Carry small rupiah for temple offerings; large notes are clumsy.

  • 03

Sarong and sash are required at temples; we provide both.

  • 04

Nyepi (Day of Silence, March) is the most extraordinary day on the island — and the airport closes.

  • 05

The Gilis are quieter than Nusa Lembongan. We send most clients to Gili Meno.
